Do I need special permit to visit North East India?

For Foreign Nationals – PAP (Protected Area Permit)/RAP (Restricted Area Permit) for foreign tourists is required to visit Arunachal Pradesh, which is issued for a period of 30 days and shall have to pay USD 60 Per head as Royalty to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh (as per the treaty between hilly area & British India govt.-for more details visit our History of North East India section) and application for PAP are to be applied through local approved tour operators only. Rest of the states needs NO PAP or RAP for foreign tourists; they have to report/register themselves to local Police station within 24 hours of arrival.

For Indian Nationals – ILP (Inner Line Permit/Pass) is required to visit Arunachal Pradesh/Nagaland/Manipur & Mizoram states for persons other than government employees and can be easily obtained on a minimum fees & formalities from respective State Houses/Online. Rest of the states does not require any special permits for Indian nationals to visit the area.

 Is it safe to travel North East India?

North East India (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura) are safe places to travel like any other states in India. Peoples are peace loving and hospitable by nature, only the political issues are making obstacle sometime which is unavoidable and out of anyone reach. Almost all the militant groups in North Eastern states of India are under the peace treaty with the Indian government presently.

Is North East India is well connected with the other parts of India?

North East India has 02 International airport e.g Guwahati & Imphal. First Indian made Dornier flew between Dibrugarh (Assam) to Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh) recently. Assam has maximum of 06 airports e.g Guwahati/Dibrugarh/Jorhat/Silchar are main airports well connected with major cities of India & Rupsi/Lilabari are connected with Guwahati/Dibrugarh & Kolkata. Apart from Air connectivity, North East India is also well connected by Train now a days. Also, North East India is well connected with our neighboring countries e.g Bhutan/Bangladesh & Myanmar.

The best time to visit North East India would be between Mid September to Mid May. Though in North East India, scope for tourism activities prevail throughout the year. One should avoid the monsoon season e.g May till August end.

Non vegetarian food is common in North East India. However, one can opt both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, which is now easily available anywhere. Restaurants offering Local, Indian (North & South Indian), Chinese & Western style foods which can be found mostly in cities and towns.

Internet connections are available in most of the cities/towns except in the more remote rural/tribal/border areas.

Can I use credit card in North East Indians states?

You can use Visa or MasterCard only a few selected places in North East Indian states. It is recommended to carry enough Indian currency for your daily expenses etc. Fooding, lodging, shopping, personal expenses, safaris, entrance fees etc. OR prebook everything with a trust worthy travel agent.
